HOGLUND, Jon & Andrea

Missionary Profile: Jon & Andrea Hoglund

Jon & Andrea Hoglund

Wheaton College – Graduate School

Starting in 2005, Jon and Andrea lived and served in Kremenchuk, Ukraine with SENDInternational.  Both studied Biblical Languages and Exegesis at the Master’s College and at Wheaton Graduate School.  After they moved to Kiev (the capital city) in 2005, they completed language school and moved to Kremenchuk (~160 miles SE of Kiev) in order to teach at Kremenchuk Bible College (KBC).  The college seeks to prepare better-qualified ministers to plant new churches and feed life-changing truth to God’s people.  Jon teaches classes in Biblical
studies, including methods of interpretation and ancient Biblical Greek.  Andrea taught a course on Methods of Biblical Inerpretation to the college’s first class of women seminarians, which was well
received.

During the summer of 2010, while on a short leave (Home Service) from the mission field, Jon completed his Master’s Degree in Theological studies from Wheaton Graduate School.

Then, in September 2010, Jon returned to KBC with the additional role as academic dean.  This added responsibility included a lot more administrative work such as arranging teachers, classes, scheduling, policy decisions, preparation of devotionals, leading of faculty meetings, while at all times keeping an eye on the bigger picture of what the college hopes the students to get out of their programs.

In addition, Jon and Andrea regularly attended a local evangelical church where Jon rotated in on some of the preaching responsibilities.  Although there has been an evangelical church in Ukraine for almost 150 years, theological education played a minor role due to constant persecution.  After Ukraine gained its independence in 1991, the church began to appreciate the potential and need for well-educated interpreters of the Bible.  Many pastors still rely only on their 150-year old translation of the Bible and perhaps a basic commentary to prepare sermons.

In September 2011, Jon & Andrea settled into life in Wheaton, IL where Jon began work on a three year program to complete his PhD in Theology.  The Ministry and Education Foundation, a non-profit in Wheaton, IL designed to help promote evangelical theological students, has approved Jon’s PhD study time and has given them a grant to help cover a portion of their living expenses while there, provided they can supplement it with additional support donations.

Jon attended Christ’s Church with his family while in High School and College.  He credits the ministry here with stoking his passion for theological education ever since a book discussion group helped him start reading classic Christian books.

Jon and Andrea have three children:

  • Joy      (2005)
  • Isaiah  (2009)
  • Agnes  (2011)

Prayer Requests:

  • That they could find ministry opportunities, even now, outside of Jon’s schooling while living in Wheaton.
  • That Jon’s studies will better prepare them for further missionary ministries.
  • Though they have not commitment to a particular future ministry or place after Jon's completion of his PhD, they pray the Lord provides another opportunity for cross-cultural ministry in theological education.
