VERSE TO MEMORIZE: “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
For years I’ve looked at this verse and thought, “How do I muster up enough faith to please Him?” I mean, I want to draw closer to God, and I do believe He exists, and the Bible says that He rewards us for seeking Him, but where do I get the faith to get this whole thing going? Where does it come from?
What if I told you that the faith that God says that we need to please Him is provided by God Himself?! It’s sort of like, in a very minor way, buying my own present and then giving it to my husband to give to me! Of course I’ll be pleased by it! But in God’s case it’s ever so much more.
How do I know that faith comes from God? Well, Hebrews 12:2 says that “Jesus is the author and perfecter of faith.” Not only is He the creator of faith, He also makes that faith grow in me. Romans 12:3 says, “God has allotted to each a measure of faith.” Or how about Romans 10:17? “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
And where, exactly, does God reveal this faith? Through His word. You don’t have to go around looking for signs in the sky, or a special dream, or anything except the Bible. As we saw in the previous paragraph, Romans 10: 17 says that the faith is revealed “by the word of Christ.” Want to know what God delights in? Go to the Word. Want to know how much He loves you? Go to the Word. Want to grow in your walk with Him? Go to the Word. He’ll do all the rest. That’s the ‘perfecting’ part of the faith He gives us.
As this series of scripture memory starts winding down, don’t give up on it. Keep hiding His Word in your hearts and see what He does with your faith!
