David Defeated Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1-50)
Read & Discuss
For centuries, pulleys and levers have made life easier for people. The laws of physics are used to lift and move heavy amounts of weight. Using these machines, a single person can lift and move more weight than ever possible by themselves. The Israelites were terrified, seeing Goliath and the Philistine army. David came to the battlefield and knew God was with him and would bring victory over this warrior who mocked God and Israel’s army. David told Goliath, “You come to fight with spear and sword, but I come to fight in the name of the Lord!” God sent David and the stone from his sling to defeat Goliath, saving the Israelite army. We are helpless to defeat our enemies, sin and death, but God sent Jesus to save us by dying for our sin and rising again.
Activity
Work together to build a cardboard box that is nine feet, nine inches tall. Toss a beanbag or small pillow to try to knock the tower over. Discuss how intimidating a warrior that tall would be.
Memory Verse
Our brand new verse is Jeremiah 10:6-7a: “There is none like You, O Lord; You are great, and Your name is great in might. Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? For this is Your due.”
Prayer
Thank God that Jesus defeated sin through the cross and conquered death through His resurrection. This battle He has already won! Ask God to give you courage to do what He calls you to face today.
