David Played for Saul (Samuel 16:14-23)

Read & Discuss

Have you heard of a lyre? No, not a person who doesn’t tell the truth. The lyre is a musical instrument in the shape of a horseshoe. In Bible times, lyres were used to put music to poetry and storytelling. King Saul was troubled, and David played the lyre and it helped calm the king. David was chosen to be the next king, but he didn’t act proud or say “I’m too important to help!” He showed humility. Even though Jesus is God, He humbled himself and took the form of a servant. He washed people’s feet and served all sinners by dying on a cross for their sins and rising again.

Activity

Have each family member write out two acts of kindness they can do for others. It can be volunteering to help with dinner, doing a chore for a sibling, writing a note to a neighbor and delivering it. Put these pieces of paper in a jar. Complete one task per day as a family and discuss how it feels to serve others and how it may have impacted them.

Memory Verse

Tape this card onto the kitchen table. Now, highlight Psalm 103:19 - “The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” Let’s memorize it!

Prayer

Thank Jesus for the countless ways He has served us. Now, ask God to help you serve others with grace and selflessness, like Jesus. Remember, it is more blessed to give than receive (Acts 20:35).
