I Don’t Do

Over the years in ministry, I've heard a number of people say things like "I really don't want to serve in the nursery" or one gal I remember said "I don't do children's ministry." Yes, we have all been gifted uniquely and differently and can find ourselves in a different season of life, but it is God's clear design for His church to function at its best when everyone finds a place to serve the needs of the body.

If you and I are going to experience the fulness of God's design, we must be careful about saying "I don't do.…" The church is a better place because many people didn't say "I don't do."

  • Aren't you glad a feisty German monk named Martin Luther didn’t say, "I don't do doors"?

  • Aren't you glad an Oxford academic named George Whitfield didn't say, "I don't do preaching in open fields"?

  • Aren't you glad Noah didn't say, "I don't do arks and animals"?

  • Aren't you glad Abraham didn't say, "I don't do traveling to new places when I'm not told where I am going"?

  • Aren't you glad Moses didn't say, "I don't do Pharoahs or mass migrations"?

  • Aren't you glad Ruth didn't say, "I don't do mothers-in-law"?

  • Aren't you glad David didn't say, "I don't do giants"?

  • Aren't you glad Daniel didn't say, "I don't do lions"?

  • Aren't you glad Mary didn't say, "I don't do virgin births"?

  • Aren't you glad John the Baptist didn't say, "I don't do forerunner work for coming Messiahs"?

  • Aren't you glad Peter didn't say, "I don't do Jewish ministry"?

  • Aren't you glad Paul didn't say, "I don't do ministry correspondence"?

  • Aren't you glad your parents or family or a friend or a pastor or an evangelist didn't say "I don't do gospel work"?

  • But most of all, aren't you glad that Jesus didn't say, "I don't do crosses"?

I know I would have missed out on much blessing and wisdom if those around me said, "I don't do.…" Just think of how many we can all bless if we don’t say "I don't do...”!

Paul said it best: "Through love, serve one another" (Galatians 5:13).
