Samuel Annointed David (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

Read & Discuss

Here’s an interesting fact. In 2016, a small piece of fungus was sold at an auction for $61,250! What?! A fungus? Well, it was a European White Truffle, a rare delicacy. Many chefs crave truffles to use in their recipes. The truffle is a treasured food even though it grows in the dirt. If you saw a truffle in the wild, you wouldn’t know it could sell for such a high price. Much like truffles, it can be hard to judge people by looking at the outside. David didn’t look like the obvious choice for king, but God saw more than his appearance, treasuring David as the king He wanted. God would send another king that looked different than expected: His name is Jesus, the King above all kings!

Activity

Plan a trip to the grocery store and pick a couple different fruits that look delicious. As you’re eating the fruit, discuss how we can usually tell if fruit will be good on the inside by looking on the outside. With people it’s different. We cannot tell what people’s hearts are like by looking only at their appearance.

Memory Verse

Try saying Psalm 103:19 in its two parts: “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens,” then “and His kingdom rules over all.” Now say it all together.

Prayer

Ask God to help you not judge people by their looks, smarts, or popularity. Ask Him to help you see others like He does and to love them like Christ. Remember, only God knows each heart.
