Be Humble

The Scriptures are chock-full of warnings about the ugliness of pride and the blessing of humility.

  • Ouch: “Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; assuredly, he will not be unpunished” (Proverbs 16:5).

  • WOW: “But to this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:2b).

  • The summary? “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but give grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5b).

I saw this in a tweet a few years ago and saved it (posted by Pastor Matt Smethurst):

What kind of people does God:

  • see (Is. 66:2)

  • save (Ps. 76:9)

  • accept (Ps. 51:17)

  • pardon (2 Chr. 7:14)

  • live with (Is. 57:15)

  • regard (Job 37:24)

  • lead (Ps. 25:9)

  • teach (Ps. 25:9)

  • revive (Is. 57:15)

  • uplift (Ps. 147:6)

  • gladden (Ps. 34:2)

  • grace (Jas. 4:6)

  • exalt (Jas. 4:10)

The humble.

May we strive to follow our Lord’s incredible act of humility when He left heaven to put on flesh. Paul uses this incomparable act to call us to “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:3–5).
