Total Forgiveness

One of the amazing blessings of knowing Christ is to receive the gift of total forgiveness. To be clear, I am using the word “total” to communicate the entirety or completeness of the forgiveness of every single sin whether past, present, or future. God communicates this to us in the following vivid ways:

  • 1 John 1:7: “but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

  • Psalm 103:12: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

  • Isaiah 38:17: "for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.”

  • Jeremiah 31:34: “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

  • Micah 7:19: “He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”

Can God really forgive all sin?

  • God forgives murderers; just ask Moses or Paul.

  • God forgives adulterers; just ask King David.

  • God forgives egomaniacs; just ask King Nebuchadnezzar.

  • God forgives liars; just ask Abraham or Isaac or Sarah or Jacob or Ananias and Sapphira.

  • God forgives those who shoot off at the mouth; just ask Peter.

  • God can forgives those who run with the bad crowd; just ask Lot.

  • God forgives those with explosive tempers; just ask the apostles James & John.

  • God forgives prostitutes; just ask Rahab or Mary Magdalene.

  • God forgives drunkards; just ask Noah.

  • God forgives racists; just ask the prophet Jonah.

  • God forgives anyone who has done it all and thinks God could never forgive them; just ask the prodigal son.

Thank God for His lavish forgiveness for undeserving sinners like you and me. This is why I love how Paul captured this when He said, “but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57).
