Crazy World, Calming God

It seems everywhere you turn, you see craziness: antisemitism; DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion), unprosecuted theft, CRT (critical race theory), fentanyl, transgender athletes, rampant victimhood, illegal immigration, climate hysteria, abortion rights, gun violence, taxation without representation, carjackings, drug addiction, shrinking families, gender confusion, identity theft, domestic violence, gender pronouns, LGBTQIA+ adoption rights, women in combat, safe spaces, euthanasia, transitioning, restricted parental rights, legalized marijuana, human trafficking.

Can it get any worse? Apparently, it can, but there is real hope.

The late Jerry Bridges stated one of my favorite quotes: “In the area of adversity, the Scriptures teach us three essential truths about God—truths we must believe if we are to trust Him in adversity. They are, God is completely sovereign. God is infinite in wisdom. God is perfect in love. Someone has expressed these three truths as they relate to us in this way, 'God in His love always wills what is best for us. In His wisdom He always knows what is best, and in His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about.'” (Is God Really in Control? Trusting God in a World of Hurt, p. 19).

Like my grandmother used to say, “That cream rises to the top,” something profound was stated. Think again about Bridges' words.

  • God in His love always wills what is best for us”: His love will sympathize with you, save you, care for you, discipline you, protect you, resource you, and even pray for you.

  • In His wisdom He always knows what is best”: Who knows better than the all-knowing God who understands every aspect of your life inside and out. He will always make the right call.

  • In His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about”: Nobody and nothing can thwart His sovereign will. No opposition can undermine His authoritative will. No loss can overturn His perfect plan. No injustice can impede His appointed way. No cancer can frustrate His flawless blueprint. No rejection can hinder His ultimate determination. No disappointment can alter His eternal strategy. He is the all-powerful God who brings His good purposes to pass in your life.

Two Scriptures summarize these truths for me:

  • For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things” (Romans 11:36).

  • We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

We can all live in a crazy world with an ever-calming God.
