Worship is a Verb
This last Sunday we learned from Jesus that true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and truth. Worship is not about being in the right place, but it is about exalting the right Person in the right way. A.W. Tozer said, “Go to church once a week and nobody pays attention. Worship God seven days a week and you become strange!” That is no doubt true, but I’d like to alter that quote a bit: “Go to church once a week and nobody pays attention. Worship God seven days a week and you will look like a true worshiper!”
Worship is all about living for the honor and glory of God in all areas of our life, not just on Sundays. Using the words, T-R-U-E W-O-R-S-H-I-P-E-R, let me spell out 13 ways we can worship the Lord in our daily lives:
T-hank God continually: Am I thanking God in every circumstance for His grace and goodness?1 Thess. 5:18: “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Col. 3:17: “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”
R-epent of your sin decisively: Am I confessing and turning from sin whenever the Spirit convicts me? Prov. 28:13: “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.” Matt. 5:29: “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
U-se your body as a living sacrifice: Am I presenting my body as a living and holy sacrifice to God?Rom. 12:1: “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.”
E-xalt Christ in humility: Am I humbly seeking Christ’s increase rather than my own? John 3:30: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
W-ash your mind with God’s word of truth: Am I marinating my mind in Scripture so that I worship God accurately? John 17:17: “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” Psalm 1:2: “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.”
O-bey Christ faithfully: Am I demonstrating my love for Christ through a willing compliance? John 14:15: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
R-ely on God in prayer: Am I depending on the Lord through continual prayer? 1 Thess. 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.”
S-ing joyfully to the Lord: Do I come before Him with joyful singing and heartfelt praise?Psalm 100:2: “Serve the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing.” Eph 5:19: “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.”
H-onor God in every area of your life: Am I seeking to glorify God in every area of my life? 1 Cor. 10:31: “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
I-mpart from your mouth praiseworthy words and gospel witness: Am I using my tongue as a tool of blessing to others?James 3:9-10: “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.” Psalm 96:2: “Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.”
P-our out your life in service: Am I serving the Lord and others gladly with the gifts He has given me? 1 Peter 4:10: “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
E-xpress your love for God wholeheartedly: Am I loving the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength? Matt. 22:37: “And He said to him, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’”
R-eflect Christ to others by your good deeds: Does my life visibly display the character of Christ before the world? Matt 5:16: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Worship is a verb and as Charles Spurgeon said: “Worship is more than a song; it is a life given to God. Every action, every word, every thought may be an act of worship.”

Statement of Faith: 24. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death and our future resurrection?
At death, the souls of believers are made perfect in holiness and immediately absent from their bodies and at home with the Lord. At the resurrection, believers are raised up in glory, given a new body, and forever free from the presence of sin (Hebrews 12:23; 2 Corinthians 5:3–8; 1 Corinthians 15:42–43).
